Where to stay in Belgrade for New Year's Eve

For New Year's Eve, where you sleep matters more than at any other time of year. Transport after midnight is the hardest part of the night, so a room within walking distance of the venue is worth more than a better room further away. Rooms also sell out long before tables do, which reverses the usual order of booking.

Book the room before the venue

The number of seats at New Year's Eve events across the city is many times larger than the number of hotel rooms available that night.

That means accommodation sells out well before the events themselves, and October is not too early.

Booking a table first and then looking for a room is the most common mistake visitors make.

Stari Grad and the centre

The old town around Knez Mihailova and Kalemegdan is the most walkable area and the easiest base for a short stay.

Most of the restaurants and bars that run New Year's Eve programmes are within walking distance, which solves the transport problem entirely.

It is also the most expensive area, and prices for that date are roughly double the usual rate.

Savamala and the waterfront

Savamala and the Sava promenade have newer hotels and a concentration of larger venues along the river.

The area is close to the centre but not quite walkable to it in winter, so plan on a short taxi ride.

Views over the river at midnight are the main reason people choose this part of town.

Novi Beograd

Across the river, Novi Beograd has the largest hotels and the biggest event halls, and is noticeably cheaper than the old town.

It is well connected by day, but returning at five in the morning requires transport arranged in advance.

For anyone attending an event in one of the large halls there, staying nearby is the practical choice.

Vračar and Dorćol

Both are residential neighbourhoods next to the centre, with smaller hotels and apartments at lower prices.

Dorćol is walkable to the old town, Vračar is a short ride away but has its own restaurants and bars.

These areas suit visitors staying several days rather than one night.

Hotels versus apartments

Apartments are cheaper per person for groups and often the only option for four or more people travelling together.

Hotels handle the guest registration required by law automatically, while private accommodation may not.

For a single night over New Year, hotels are simpler; for three nights or more, apartments usually make more sense.

Late checkout

Standard checkout is at noon, which after a night ending at five in the morning is very early.

Late checkout must be requested when booking, not at reception on 1 January when the hotel is full.

Sometimes an extra night costs less than paying for a few extra hours, so compare both before deciding.

Hotel New Year's Eve packages

Many hotels sell a package combining the room, dinner and the programme at a single price per person.

This is usually cheaper than buying the parts separately, and it removes the transport problem completely.

These packages have a limited number of places and are released earlier than individual tables.

Minimum stay

Over this date many properties require a minimum of two nights, and some three.

That is standard practice and not negotiable at the better hotels, so plan the trip around it.

The extra night is often the cheapest of the stay and gives you 1 January in a very quiet city.

Deposits and cancellation

Bookings for this date usually require full prepayment or a substantial non-refundable deposit.

Free cancellation, where offered at all, ends much earlier than for ordinary dates, often thirty days before.

Ask for the exact cancellation date in writing before paying, as terms differ between properties.

Registration and documents

Foreign visitors must be registered with the authorities; hotels do this automatically at check in.

If you stay in private accommodation, confirm with the host that registration will be handled, as it is a legal requirement.

Keep your passport with you on arrival, as it is needed for check in.

Practical choice

If the event is booked, choose accommodation within walking distance of it and ignore everything else.

If the event is not booked yet, stay in the old town, where the choice of venues within walking distance is largest.

Either way, book the room in October and the venue in November.
