What New Year's Eve costs in Belgrade
Belgrade is cheaper than most European capitals for New Year's Eve, which is a large part of why visitors come. What is less obvious is that the advertised price of a venue is rarely the final figure, and that the gap between the two is consistent enough to be planned for.
The advertised price
Venues advertise a price per person which covers the seat, dinner as described and the programme.
Everything else is separate, and that is where the difference between expectation and the final bill comes from.
The first question for any venue is what exactly is included in the quoted figure.
Drinks
This is the largest additional item. Where drinks are not included, a normally drinking group can spend as much again on them.
A welcome drink means one glass on arrival and should be treated as though drinks are not included at all.
Where a drinks package exists, ask which drinks and until what time, as both limits are common.
Venue categories
Neighbourhood taverns are the cheapest, restaurants in the centre sit in the middle, hotels with a programme are the most expensive.
Clubs charge the least at the door but include no food, so dinner happens elsewhere.
The difference between the cheapest and most expensive category is roughly threefold for the same evening.
Accommodation
Hotel rates for 31 December are roughly double the usual rate, and many properties require a minimum of two nights.
Apartments are cheaper per person for groups of four or more and are often the only option for larger parties.
The third night is frequently the cheapest of the stay, as demand falls sharply after 1 January.
Transport within the city
Getting home after midnight costs several times the usual fare, with surge pricing on apps and few taxis working.
For a group, one vehicle arranged in advance at a fixed price is the single largest saving available.
Public transport runs on a special timetable and is the cheapest option, but crowded and slow.
Getting to Belgrade
Flights in the last week of December cost roughly double what they do in October, and the return on 1 January is the most expensive leg.
Flying back on 3 or 4 January is usually noticeably cheaper and the airport is far less crowded.
Booking travel in September or October rather than December is the largest single saving on the whole trip.
The extras
Cloakroom charges are per item and paid in cash. For a group with coats this is not trivial.
Tips are customary, around ten percent, and slightly more is expected on this particular night.
Parking is charged separately almost everywhere in the centre and is full from early evening.
Musicians at the table
Where an orchestra circulates between tables, requests are tipped directly and this adds up across the night.
There is no fixed amount and it is entirely discretionary, but it is expected if you make requests.
Cards are not used for this, and cash machines run empty on 1 January.
How to calculate the real cost
Multiply the per-person price by the group size, then add drinks, transport both ways, cloakroom and tips.
That sum is the realistic cost of the evening and is the figure to compare between venues.
As a rule of thumb, budget about a third above the advertised price and you will be close.
Where the savings actually are
Choosing a neighbourhood venue over one in the centre, and one vehicle for the whole group over individual journeys.
Booking accommodation and flights early, which alone can halve the cost of the trip.
Choosing 13 January instead of 31 December, which gives a comparable programme for considerably less.
Where not to economise
On the journey home, because saving on transport turns into an hour and a half waiting in the cold.
On the deposit, because an informal arrangement without payment means there is no booking.
On checking the offer, because the largest losses happen to people who pay without written confirmation.
Good value overall
Compared with other European capitals, a Belgrade New Year remains good value even after all the extras.
The difference is largest on food and drink and smallest on accommodation over that particular date.
For groups, the value is better still, because the biggest costs divide well across more people.
